Rheumatology

Rheumatology is a medical sub-specialty dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases affecting the joints, muscles, and connective tissues, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, gout and osteoarthritis. Rheumatologists employ a range of therapies, including medications and lifestyle interventions, to manage chronic pain and improve functional outcomes for patients with these conditions. The burden of rheumatic diseases is compounded by infectious diseases like HIV and tuberculosis, which can trigger or worsen autoimmune conditions in sub-Saharan Africa.
