Geriatrics

Geriatrics is a medical sub-specialty focused on the healthcare of older adults, addressing complex age-related conditions such as frailty, dementia, and chronic diseases. Geriatricians work to optimize the quality of life for elderly patients by managing multiple coexisting conditions, promoting functional independence, and providing comprehensive, holistic care. Geriatrics in sub-Saharan Africa is an emerging field, shaped by the region’s growing elderly population and the challenges of managing age-related health issues. Traditionally, extended family structures provided care for the elderly, but rapid urbanization and changing social dynamics are shifting this responsibility.
