Family medicine is a medical sub-specialty that provides comprehensive healthcare for individuals and families, addressing a wide range of physical, emotional, and social health issues across all ages. Family physicians focus on preventive care, chronic disease management, and health education, emphasizing the importance of continuity of care and building long-term relationships with patients. Family medicine in sub-Saharan Africa plays a vital role in providing comprehensive, patient-centered care, particularly in underserved communities where access to specialized healthcare is limited. Family physicians address a wide range of health issues, including chronic diseases, maternal and child health, and mental health, often serving as the first point of contact in the healthcare system. Collaboration between family medicine and various specialties, such as paediatrics, obstetrics, psychiatry, surgery and internal medicine, can significantly enhance the quality of care by ensuring holistic management of patients’ health needs and improving continuity of care. Such interdisciplinary approaches facilitate better referrals, integrated services, and shared knowledge, ultimately leading to improved health outcomes. Despite the growing recognition of family medicine’s importance, challenges remain, including a shortage of trained family physicians and limited resources, which necessitate ongoing efforts to strengthen this field across the region.
