Sebaceous Cyst

Background

Sebaceous cysts in darker-skinned individuals are typically smooth, round lumps under the skin that are filled with a thick, yellowish substance, often appearing on the face, scalp, back, or neck. These cysts are usually benign and develop when sebaceous glands or hair follicles become clogged with oil, dead skin cells, or keratin. Treatment often involves surgical excision to remove the cyst and prevent recurrence, though in some cases, drainage or corticosteroid injections may be used to reduce inflammation or discomfort.
