Icthyosis

Background

Ichthyosis in darker-skinned individuals often presents as dry, scaly patches that may range from pale to darker shades, and can be more difficult to identify due to the skin’s pigmentation. This condition, which results from a genetic mutation, causes the skin to shed cells abnormally, leading to a buildup of scales. Treatment typically includes regular moisturizing with emollients, topical keratolytic agents like urea or salicylic acid, and, in some cases, oral retinoids to manage severe forms and improve skin texture.
