Hypertrophic Scars

Background

Hypertrophic scars in darker-skinned individuals are raised, thick scars that stay within the boundaries of the original injury site, often appearing red or darker in color. These scars are caused by an overproduction of collagen during the healing process and are more common in individuals with darker skin tones due to a genetic tendency for heightened scarring. Treatment options include silicone gel sheets, corticosteroid injections, laser therapy, and pressure garments, with the goal of flattening the scar and improving its appearance.
