Hidradenitis Suppurative (Recurrent Boils in the Axillae)
Background
Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) in darker-skinned individuals often presents as painful, inflamed lumps or abscesses in areas like the armpits, groin, or under the breasts, which may lead to darkened skin or scarring. This chronic skin condition occurs when hair follicles and sweat glands become blocked, causing recurring infections and the formation of tunnels under the skin. Treatment includes the use of antibiotics to manage infections, corticosteroids to reduce inflammation, and in severe cases, biologic medications like adalimumab or surgical intervention to drain abscesses and remove damaged tissue.
