Folliculitis, Furuncles (Boils)

Background

Folliculitis and furuncles in darker-skinned individuals often appear as red, inflamed bumps or abscesses around hair follicles, with the possibility of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or scarring. These skin infections, caused by bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus, can lead to painful swelling, pus-filled nodules, or larger boils (furuncles). Treatment typically involves oral or topical antibiotics, warm compresses to drain abscesses, and practicing good hygiene to prevent recurrence and reduce scarring.
