Erysipelas
Background
Erysipelas in darker-skinned individuals presents as a well-defined, red, and swollen area of the skin, often on the face or legs, with the redness potentially appearing darker due to skin pigmentation. The condition is caused by a bacterial infection, typically Streptococcus, and can lead to fever, pain, and warmth in the affected area. Treatment involves oral or intravenous antibiotics such as penicillin or cephalexin to fight the infection, along with pain management and elevation of the affected area to reduce swelling.
