Discoid lupus erythematosus

Background

Discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) is a chronic skin condition more common and often more severe in individuals with African skin, frequently presenting as dark hyperpigmented plaques with central hypopigmentation, scaling, and scarring, especially on the face and scalp. In darker skin tones, the lesions may be mistaken for lichen planus or post-inflammatory changes, leading to delayed diagnosis. Scarring alopecia is a common and distressing outcome when the scalp is involved. Treatment includes sun protection, topical corticosteroids, calcineurin inhibitors, and antimalarials like hydroxychloroquine.
