Viral Infections of the Skin
Viral infections of the skin are common across Sub-Saharan Africa, affecting people of all ages and often linked to environmental, immunological, and socioeconomic factors. These infections include conditions such as herpes simplex, varicella-zoster (shingles), molluscum contagiosum, and viral warts—many of which spread easily through direct contact. In immunocompromised individuals, especially those living with HIV, skin viral infections can become severe and recurrent. Strengthening viral awareness, early diagnosis, vaccination programs, and hygiene practices are essential steps in reducing their prevalence and improving skin health in the region.
