Superficial Fungal Infections
Superficial fungal infections are among the most prevalent skin diseases in Sub-Saharan Africa, caused by dermatophytes, yeasts, and molds that thrive in the region’s warm and humid climate. Common types include tinea (ringworm), pityriasis versicolor, and candidiasis, which affect the skin, hair, and nails. These infections often cause itching, discoloration, and discomfort, and may spread rapidly in overcrowded or unhygienic environments. Early diagnosis, proper hygiene, and appropriate antifungal treatment are key to effective management and prevention of recurrence. Public health awareness and improved dermatologic care can greatly reduce their regional burden.
