Sporotrichosis
Sporotrichosis is a chronic fungal infection caused by Sporothrix schenckii, commonly found in soil, plants, and decaying vegetation. Often called the “rose gardener’s disease,” it typically enters the body through minor cuts or punctures, leading to nodular skin lesions that can spread along lymphatic channels. In Sub-Saharan Africa, sporotrichosis is an emerging but underrecognized infection, particularly among agricultural and gardening workers. While primarily affecting the skin, it can become systemic in immunocompromised individuals, including those with HIV. Early clinical recognition and antifungal treatment are vital to preventing severe complications and reducing misdiagnosis in resource-limited settings.
