Leprosy (Hansen’s Disease)
Leprosy, also known as Hansen’s disease, is a chronic infectious condition caused by Mycobacterium leprae, primarily affecting the skin, peripheral nerves, and mucous membranes. In Sub-Saharan Africa, leprosy remains a public health concern, particularly in underserved rural areas where early detection and treatment access are limited. The disease can lead to skin lesions, nerve damage, and deformities if left untreated, but it is entirely curable with multi-drug therapy (MDT). Raising awareness, reducing stigma, and strengthening community-based healthcare programs are vital steps toward achieving leprosy elimination across the region.
