Amoeba Cutis

Amoeba cutis, also known as cutaneous amoebiasis, is a rare but serious skin infection caused by free-living amoebae such as Acanthamoeba and Entamoeba histolytica. In Sub-Saharan Africa, where warm climates and limited sanitation infrastructure increase exposure risks, understanding this condition is vital for early diagnosis and treatment. The infection often presents as painful ulcers or nodules, particularly in immunocompromised patients or those with prior skin trauma. Early recognition and targeted antimicrobial therapy are essential to prevent systemic spread and tissue destruction. Raising clinical awareness of amoeba cutis supports better differential diagnosis of tropical skin diseases and strengthens dermatological care in African healthcare settings.
